United BusinessFirst SFO to Frankfurt to Barcelona

Updated: Aug 9, 2018

I had a conference in Barcelona and was on UA 58 to Frankfurt with a LH connection onto BCN.

With a little time to burn after getting to SFO, checked out the United Club that was as tired as ever.

The bar with unimpressive drinks and several you could purchase.

But at least there were great views for plane spotting.

LH454 pulling in.

More plane spotting as I headed to my gate.

My bird, she might be old, but the queen is the most beautiful!

I was lucky to get a window seat on the 2nd level and not the terrible 2-4-2 on the bottom level.

It's always a treat to fly on the upper deck of a 747. United has an odd configuration of alternating forward and rearward facing seats.

My seat for the next 11-hours. The good part of sitting against the window besides the view are the storage bins.

The directions of the seats mean you can be effectively looking at strangers...

The LH whale getting ready to become 455.

Heading for a 28L departure.

Smooth climb out of SFO.

Great views of SF on a sunny and clear day.

The menu, although because this was well before I ever started a blog, didn't take a picture of the contents.

Starting with a meh sparkling wine.

Followed by actually good smoked salmon. The salad was definitely meh cafeteria salad.

I ordered the pork chop with a bread pudding stuffing and feared the worst, but ironically this was one of the best pork chops I've had anywhere, period.

An ok cheese plate, but port is always good and ended up going strong there.

The traditional United sundae, can't mess that up.

After several glasses of port later, time to go flat and nap for a few hours. It's not a wide seat, but certainly beats economy.

About 90 minutes out of FRA, had breakfast that was pretty decent with a frittata/scramble, potato gratin and sausage.

We touched down on time and after passing some time in one of the LH lounges, connected for the short hop down to Barcelona. Plenty of good plane spotting at FRA.

Despite the Euro-fraud business class seats, the snack was pretty good with cold cuts and a nice pudding.

A little scotch to help it go down.

All in all, decent flights, nothing memorable or worth aspiring to. For a United flight over, it was one of the better ones, but it's certainly no LH or LX.
