Singapore First Class HKG-SFO

I was excited to finally try Singapore First Class. I've flown Singapore before in the other classes and had fantastic times, but how would First Class be? I got to the gate with a couple of minutes before boarding and spotted our 77W ready to ferry us across the Pacific.

The gate agents kept things orderly and had First Class separated from Business and all the Star Alliance status holders.

Boarding commenced on time and with just one other pax, we headed down the first jet bridge.

A friendly welcome as we approached the door, Zephyr was one of the first class flight attendants and super friendly, yet professional.

And escorted us to our seats on either side of the cabin, with my throne being 1A.

The cabin was absolutely stunning with Singapore's mocha and orange accented seats. The diamond stitching was gorgeous.


The First Class cabin on the 77W is arranged in a 1-2-1 layout, but unlike Air France, they had more space behind the two middle seats which made the cabin feel less claustrophobic.

Despite not having doors on the suites, you couldn't see anyone else, even if the cabin was full. If you're seated in the middle and you're not traveling with a companion, you can raise the privacy divider.

The seat had a nice size screen, although not as large as the 32" on Swiss, still not a problem since it's a bit closer with the positioning. When we boarded, there were all the goodies nicely displayed.

And a bit early, but nice Xmas wreath touch!

Checking out the left side of the seat with nice leather upholstery and lighting. Unfortunately since this was a night flight, no views out the window today.

On the right side were the seat controls, light and entertainment controller.

There aren't any overhead bins, so your luggage goes underneath the seat in front. Also they distributed throw blankets and slippers.

Zephyr asked if I'd prefer Krug 2004 or Dom Perignon for my pre-departure beverage, of course had to jump at the opportunity to start with Krug 2004!

Krug 04 and the Bose QC25's, nice going Singapore to not skimp on either!

The Lalique amenity kit was nice, but slightly different than normal because while it had a few goodies, most were available in the bathroom itself.

Comfortably slippers that came in different sizes so I didn't have to try and cram my feet into a universal one.

I decided to change as I usually do before push-back and the lavatory was a good size for a 77W and nicely appointed. Throughout the flight it was kept in immaculate condition.

Then menus were distributed, and what an epically large and beautifully bound menu it was. In addition to the menu, I Booked the Cook to ensure I got the entree I really wanted.



It was interesting the first few pages were the first segment of SQ2 from Singapore to Hong Kong and I was able to check that menu out.

Then onto our segment of SQ2 from Hong Kong to SFO. For a night flight it was good to see several tasty options and I was half tempted to switch to the seared beef filet from my lamb, but decided to stick with what I'd ordered.

Then onto the wine list, let's see how they stack up besides the excellent Champagnes.

Dom 2009 and Krug 2004 are fantastic options and I think the only double selection of top providers given to customers.

Some solid whites, although I would have liked to see a white Burgundy. The reds looked good and funny thing, earlier I had tried the 2006 Rauzan-Segla at James Suckling Wine Central, so definitely asked them to start decanting that as soon as they could. Nice Dow's 20, a favorite and staple.

Nice cocktail selection, unfortunately I didn't get around to trying the Singapore Sling.

Large selection of non-alcoholic beverages, nice to take care of those folks as well.

Plenty of coffee options, woah!

And the teas, nice selection of TWG!


After being blown away by the depth and quality of the menu, time to push back. Jose (pronounced Josie) was absolutely wonderful and insisted I take several reading materials for whenever I might want!

The ambient lighting was very elegant and swanky, perfect for a night flight.

And up we went on a bit of a bumpy climb, it made it difficult to get a not blurry picture.

I really loved the mood lighting, exactly my taste.



Not more than 10-minutes after takeoff, Jose and Zephyr jumped into action to take care of the two of us. This started with warm mixed nuts.

I had to get another picture of the beautiful seat with the mood lighting.

And then the picture everyone goes for when they fly Singapore First, when asked if you'd take Dom or Krug, the answer is always...why choose?

This was a fantastic side by side comparison. I'm typically more of a Krug guy, but it was fun trying vintage 2004 Krug instead of the NV as well as Dom 2009. The Dom 2009 on the left was nicer than I recalled it being with a nose of white peach, floral and slight toast, while the body was medium with fresh acidity that played perfectly against some toastiness, apple, lemon zest and a limestone finish. The Krug 2004 was richer with a more powerful nose of honey, hazelnuts and citrus. The body was fuller than the Dom with floral honey, green apple, lemon curd and a toasty finish.

Zephyr brought by the wonderful bread basket, I went for my usual favorites anywhere, garlic bread and cheesy sticks.

They went great with the appetizer of smoked salmon, caviar and creme fraiche. While not a proper caviar presentation, it was still nice to have and very fresh. They went wonderfully with the champagne and I definitely enjoyed a few more glasses.

Then I moved onto the lobster bisque that was wonderful and a different take to the normal. The sherry component was definitely there and the lobster was substantial, definitely more than I was expecting.

Jose had decanted the Rauzan and it was drinking beautifully by this point. It had nice dark cassis, blackberries, cedar, smooth tannins that are starting to resolve and acidity keeping it fresh. Really great mouth feel and wonderful to enjoy with plenty of time to kill. I asked to just enjoy the wine for a bit before moving onto the main.

After watching more TV, I asked for the main to be prepared and shortly there after it was ready. I used Book the Cook to pre-order the rack of lamb. It was wonderful, perfectly prepared and seasoned. It came with a mashed root vegetable and sauteed mushrooms and green beans, paired with demi glace.

Just check out that perfect medium temperature and it even still had a crunch to the crust.

After taking some more time to breath, I ordered the warm chocolate cake with ice cream. A perfect way to end the meal and truly be ready for bed.

After watching more TV before going horizontal, Jose suggested like my fellow passenger, to use the center seats as our beds and keep our window seats as just seats. So 1C was my bed for the night with a plush mattress pad and comfy sheets and comforter. I typically like softer beds and I'd heard Singapore's beds are usually hard, but luckily I found it to be fine. Also Jose was great to ask me if I preferred the cabin temp to be warm or cooler. I told her please keep it cooler and she did which helped tremendously in sleeping well.

Really nice pillows, some of the best I've had in the air for my tastes.

I fell asleep to old Arrested Development re-runs, such an amazing and whitty show!

A loose-seal...for those of you who watched it.

I slept great for about 3-hours until we hit some solid turbulence that woke me, but luckily was able to fall back asleep and slept for another 2-hours. When I woke up this time I decided to force myself to wake up and not continue sleeping since I'd be landing in the evening and needed to go back to bed not too long after getting home. So back to 1A I went.

I did my usual walk through the length of the plane, but the lights were off so I couldn't get any pictures of the other cabins. On my way back into the first cabin, my fellow passenger was also up so they turned the lights on for us. Here's a view of the walkway behind the middle seats.

And back to catching up and finishing the 5th season of Silicon Valley.

I asked to have breakfast and started with the fresh fruit platter that was excellent. Jose said I should try some cottage cheese and it was actually a good pairing, not that I'd probably repeat that at home.

Then some more gazing out at the sunset on the clouds.

Beautiful!

Then the amazing selection of pastries, oh man I need another stomach!

I got an assorted sampler and went with the French toast and freshly scrambled eggs. Everything was wonderful, fresh and fantastic.

The freshly scrambled eggs were spot on, better than most restaurants on the ground. The French toast was a perfect texture and on point.

I was tempted to go back to some Krug before landing, but decided to reign it in with some tea.

Sadly after that it was time to start our descent, but not before Jose after hearing about MsFlamingo and the Chairman, said I needed to take them the famous Singapore bears to them. What a thoughtful parting gift!

And sadly the party ending again as we began our descent into SFO.

The best I could get of SF down below. This was the tail end of the horrible fires in CA and you could see the smoke down below.


Soon enough we were on the ground and at Terminal G.


Singapore First Class was awesome, it was in a way sad to leave the amazing crew of Jose, Zephyr and Sunny the in flight manager who also assisted and kept checking in with us.


What truly separated Singapore from the other top first class products was the service. It was perfectly on point, yet they were so personable and friendly. I felt like I was sad to leave friends. The food was great, right about there with my favorites Swiss and Air France, the hard product was great and unique and a good wine selection. I would love to fly Singapore First again and would highly recommend anyone who has the chance, to take them!
