Copenhagen

As our final destination on our European tour, Copenhagen would give MsFlamingo a sampling of the Nordic culture.

We arrived Saturday afternoon and quickly made our way to our hotel, the SP34.

The hotel was very modern and had great music and vibes going downstairs. I'll put it this way, the check-in for the hotel was at the bar itself.

It was normally packed with people, but I took this picture in the morning.

MsFlamingo loved the elevator being bright pink.

After checking in, we dropped off our bags in our room. The room was city sized and a slightly refreshed classic Euro room.

Two twin beds pushed together.

After dropping our bags off, we headed out on foot to get a feel for the town.

We got a chuckle out of this bar given MsFlamingo rarely has more than two glasses of wine anymore.

Absolutely gorgeous buildings and squares with very friendly people.

Back to our hotel to get ready for dinner.

For tonight we had reservations at AOC, an absolutely phenomenal 2-star (but should be 3-star) restaurant. Check out this post for the story!

The next day, we rented bikes from the hotel and decided to explore more of the city. The roads are setup for cars, separate lanes (and mini-traffic lights) for bikes, then pedestrian walkways. It was brilliant and so fun!

We started off by riding up the river area and stopping for a coffee.

Given the great weather, people were lounging and catching some sun.

We were super tempted to rent one of the swan paddle boats, but decided we'd save that for another time.

More amazing views along the river.

A happy, but cold, MsFlamingo.

A great view from one of the bridges crossing the river.

It was lunch time and MsFlamingo was feeling pizza and found a place that made their own gluten free dough for those who need it. We biked across the bridge and back into town to Gorm's.

Very small and cool atmosphere.

Really cool choices, it was hard to narrow it down.

I went with the lamb pizza and it was unbelievably simple, flavorful and delicious.

MsFlamingo went with the Hawaiian on their gluten free dough.

After a fantastic lunch, we headed back outside to continue our city tour.

On our way, we stumbled across what at first seemed like a small park, but turned out to be the massive and amazing Kongens Have park.

Amazing gardens that were very well kept.

People just relaxing and soaking up the sun and nice weather.

We walked down one of the paths and into a really nice sitting area.

Areas blocked off for nice flowers growing within the grass.

Behind this was a nice coffee shop, we got a coffee and sat down for a bit in the sun before continuing on exploring the park.

That was an absolutely amazing park, if I were a local, I'd be there every weekend. We headed out to continue our tour and head towards the water.

We checked out the Little Mermaid statue that was built to commemorate the writer of the original Little Mermaid story who was Danish. This was very unimpressive and mainly a tourist trap.

Masses of tourists, pass.

A cool ship heading back to port.

A nice monument surrounded by cherry trees in blossom, perfect.

We then headed to the Castell (fort) shaped like a star.

The banks were very cool.

On our way into the fort, a fountain monument.

And church.

The bridge into the fort.

Inside the main area of the fort.

Up onto the perimeter of the star.

A lovely windmill and cannon.

And back to where we started and out of the fort and onto the Botanical Garden.

We rode our bikes down to the Botanical gardens to check them out.

Some nice grounds.

So many species of plants.

Inside one of the greenhouses.

After the botanical gardens, we headed back to our favorite park for another coffee. It was really nice sitting there for a while and taking in the sights and enjoying the day.

After the coffee, we headed out to check out the canals.

Start of the canal area, touristy, but not too bad compared to other sites.

So many great little restaurants to check out.

Plenty of old style boats in the canal.

We of course had to stop for gelato and I tried the waffles that were everywhere, tasty, but sweet!

We got to the end of the canal/pier and saw several ferries and the theater.

Across the way was the symphony hall.

We slowly started our trek back to our hotel.

We ended up going out to a burger bar for dinner, some simpler food sounded good for a change.

After dinner we had drinks at our hotel bar to wind down.

Quite a nice gin and tonic.

After walking over 11-miles and biking who knows how many, we slept great.

The next morning we had breakfast downstairs included in our hotel. It was a nice spread and everything was very fresh.

We headed back to the coffee spot from the prior morning, it was colder today, but we were joined by some wildlife.

We did a more ambitious bike ride out to the castle. It was a bit of a ride, but nice to see a Danish castle.

We walked the grounds

And sat on the lawn for a bit to enjoy the surroundings and view.

After that, we biked back to our hotel to pack and head to dinner.

We ended up going to the canal area to stay festive and decided on a seafood place, ironically called Hummer.

Some creative and tasty appetizers.

And an absolutely amazing grilled lobster.

We headed back to our hotel for a night cap and bed for our trip home the next day. It was nearly 3-weeks on the road, but we got to visit some amazing places and look forward to returning. We'd highly recommend Copenhagen for everyone to visit, it was so beautiful, clean, friendly and the restaurants tasty.
